USD NEW or USD: which rate applies to your notes?

Our rate table lists the dollar twice because the rate depends on the series of the note. You will find the series year on the front of the note, next to the word SERIES, for example SERIES 2013.

Which US dollar notes we accept and at which rate
Note Series How we exchange it
$100 with a blue 3-D ribbon 2009 and later at the USD NEW rate on this page
$100 with a large portrait and no ribbon 1996–2006 at the USD rate on this page
$50 and smaller notes 1996 and later at a rate set by the cashier
All denominations before 1996 not accepted

$50 bills from series 2009 onwards also count as USD NEW, but the rates on this page apply to $100 bills only. The cashier sets the rate for $50s and smaller notes. If you are not sure which item your notes fall under, call +48 884 886 181 before you come.

We do not accept notes from series before 1996. On $5 to $100 bills you can spot them by the small portrait in an oval frame in the middle. They are still valid: the Federal Reserve says all designs of US currency remain legal tender, regardless of when they were issued. We do not take coins or damaged notes either. Selling or buying dollars?

Changing dollars into złoty. Select USD NEW or USD under “You give”, depending on the series of your notes, and PLN under “You get”. You get our “We buy” rate: the number of złoty we pay you for 1 dollar.

Buying dollars with złoty. Select PLN under “You give” and USD NEW or USD under “You get”. You pay our “We sell” rate. With USD NEW you get notes from series 2009 onwards.

The “We sell” rate is higher than the “We buy” rate. We earn on that gap, so we charge no commission in either direction.

How many złoty will I get for 100 dollars?

Multiply 100 by the “We buy” rate and you have the złoty you get for $100. If you are buying, multiply 100 by the “We sell” rate. We have worked out common amounts below, separately for USD NEW and USD, at the rates on the cards above. The table lists whole hundreds only, because our online rates are for $100 bills.

Why our rate differs from the one on Google

Search “USD to PLN” and Google shows you a single number: the mid-market rate from the interbank market, halfway between buying and selling, with no cost of handling cash. The National Bank of Poland (NBP) publishes its own mid-rate on business days, and we use it to check whether a transaction reaches the EUR 15,000 threshold for ID. At a counter you trade at a buy rate or a sell rate, so compare those two numbers.

When you compare exchange offices in Warsaw, check five things:

  • Both rates for the same series. The gap between buying and selling is what the exchange costs you.
  • Which notes the rate covers: the denomination and the series. Our online rates cover $100 bills, with one rate for series 2009 onwards and another for series 1996–2006.
  • Whether there is a commission. Ours is 0 PLN, whatever the amount.
  • When the rate was last updated. We change ours by hand during the day and show the date and time of the last change on each card.
  • Whether the online rate applies at the counter, and whether the office is in the NBP register. Ours applies as long as you quote it before the exchange begins, and you can check our entry, number 20550, in the NBP search.

Do you need dollars or złoty in Warsaw?

Shops, restaurants and public transport in Warsaw charge in Polish złoty (PLN), so change your dollars into złoty if you want cash for your stay. If you have złoty left at the end of your trip, change them back into dollars at the same counter. In that direction the “We sell” rate applies.

Reserve the rate before you come

  1. Choose USD NEW or USD in the calculator and enter the amount.
  2. Click “Reserve this rate” and leave your phone number and email address.
  3. Check the item, the direction of the exchange and the amount, then send the request.
  4. Come to the counter within 60 minutes, and before closing time.

Reservations are available only during opening hours, excluding public holidays. The rate is valid for up to 60 minutes from submission, but no later than closing time. A reservation does not guarantee cash availability. If the amount you need is unavailable, we will call you.

When do you need ID?

We ask for photo ID (a passport, national ID card or residence card) for any transaction equivalent to EUR 15,000 or more at the NBP mid-rate for the day. We may also ask for ID in other cases provided for by anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing law, including for lower amounts.

What is the dollar rate today at Kantor X?

Check the two rate cards at the top of the page. “We sell USD NEW → you pay PLN” and “We sell USD → you pay PLN” show what 1 dollar costs you at the counter in $100 bills, with no commission. Each card shows the date and time of the last change, and the table above has the amounts for $100 to $1,000.

How many złoty will I get for a $100 bill?

100 times the “We buy” rate. A $100 bill from series 2009 or later goes at the USD NEW rate, and one from series 1996 to 2006 at the USD rate. There is no commission, and the table shows both.

Do you accept old dollar bills?

Yes, from series 1996 onwards. We exchange $100 bills from series 1996 to 2006 at the USD rate on this page. We do not accept notes from before 1996, even though they remain legal tender in the US.

Is a 2006 $100 bill still valid?

Yes. The Federal Reserve says all designs of US currency remain legal tender, regardless of when they were issued. We exchange $100 bills from series 2006 at the USD rate on this page.

How can I tell a new $100 bill from an old one?

Look for the year next to the word SERIES on the front. You can spot the new $100 without it: a blue 3-D security ribbon runs down the middle, and next to it sits an inkwell with a bell that changes colour. Notes of this design have been in circulation since 2013.

Is the online rate valid at the counter?

Yes, for $100 bills. Quote the online rate before the exchange begins. You can also reserve the rate online: it is valid for up to 60 minutes from submission, but no later than closing time.

Do you charge commission?

No. Commission is 0 PLN for any amount. We earn on the difference between our buy and sell rates, and you can see both before you visit.

Are you open on Sundays and public holidays?

On Sundays we are open from 11:00 to 20:00, including non-trading Sundays. We close on 1 November, 24 to 26 December, 1 and 6 January, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, and keep our usual hours on the other public holidays.
